Some diseases or pathological changes can only be diagnosed or ruled out via the exact examination on tissue or even down, on cellular level. For a histological examination, tiny tissue samples obtained by a biopsy or taken from surgically removed tissues/organs are specifically prepared to analyze them microscopically. If single cells (and not entire cell complexes = tissue) are analyzed under the microscope, it’s called a cytological examination. Both procedures are commonly used to precisely determine whether and which exact type of cancer has affected your body. Histological / cytological examinations are part of the standard tumor staging process.
