Virtual colonoscopy

The virtual colonoscopy, also called computed tomography colonography (CTC), is a test in which low-dose radiation CT scanning is used to produce pictures of the colon and rectum. It has established as an excellent alternative screening method for colorectal cancer, which is one of the most frequent cancer types in people over age of 50. The majority of colorectal cancers develop in specific types of polyps known as adenomas. Detecting and removing adenomas may prevent colon cancer. During virtual colonoscopy CT images are taken of the patient’s abdomen they are examined for polyps and other abnormalities, using advanced computer software.

In comparison to the conventional colonoscopy there is no endoscope inserted into the colon to capture images of the interior The benefits for the patient are obvious: CT colonography has a markedly lower risk of perforating the colon than conventional colonoscopy, it also can detect abnormalities outside of the colon and due to the painless procedure no sedation or pain relievers are required for this exam.

At International Diagnostic Center Frankfurt this less invasive colorectal cancer screening is accessible to our patients.
