Mammography / MR mammography

The conventional mammography is a low-dose x-ray examination producing images of the breast called a mammogram. Up to recent years x-ray mammography played a central role in breast cancer screening. Based on newest studies, some of the leading oncologists and gynecologists voicing the opinion that conventional mammography by x-ray examination is out-of-date. Mainly the high rate of false-positive (no cancer while imaging suggests it) and false-negative (cancer, while imaging not detects it) results as well as the burden by harmful x-ray radiation exposure seems in the long run inacceptable.

In particular, the significant advantages of MR mammography led to a paradigm shift in breast cancer screening. The resolution and quality of soft tissue imaging by MRI is unrivalled. Thus, even tumors of minimally size can be detected very early when they are still not visible with x-ray mammography or ultrasound. Early detection of breast cancer is crucial, as early-stage cancers are mostly curable and breast-conservation therapies still feasible. Furthermore the examination is quick, free of radiation exposure and does not cause discomfort to women, since images can be captured without compression of the breast.

As part of our International Diagnostic Center Frankfurt, we have integrated a specialized breast center, offering all modern diagnostic procedures to our international female patients (including MR mammography, ultrasound scan, biopsy of suspicious lesions etc.).
