(Digital) X-Ray

X-ray or radiography uses a very small dose of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of the body's internal structures. X-rays are the oldest and most frequently used form of medical imaging. They are often used to help diagnose fractured bones, look for injury or infection and to locate foreign objects in soft tissue. Some x-ray exams may use an iodine-based contrast material or barium to help improve the visibility of specific organs, blood vessels, tissues or bone.

In recent times the traditional radiography is more and more replaced by digital radiography, using digital X-ray sensors instead of photographic film. Advantages include time efficiency through bypassing chemical processing and the ability to digitally transfer and enhance images. Also, less radiation can be used to produce an image of similar contrast to conventional radiography.

Since the more sophisticated imaging techniques (MRI, CT scan) provide a much higher image quality and a better ratio of diagnostic information to radiation exposure (MRI has none), we use radiography just in selected, uncomplicated cases.
